HRFC Brothers Lost: Bradley Miller

Bradley E. Miller, 70, of Hummelstown passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 12, 2020, in Westminster, MD.

Born in Stoverdale on November 1, 1949, he was the son of the late Ray W. “Red” and Sara E. “Sotsie” Stover Miller. Brad worked as a farmer for his grandfather on the family farm in Stoverdale until 1979. From 1979 to 1985 he was a Farm Systems Salesperson for Agway. Upon leaving Agway, Brad founded B&B Pole Building of Hummelstown with his wife Barbara in 1986.

Sports was an important part of Brad’s life. He played rugby with the Harrisburg Rugby Football Club and softball on the Hillcrest Auto Body Softball Team. He coached Teener Baseball from 1980 to 1986; and the American Legion Team from 1999 to 2004. He was the biggest supporter of the Lower Dauphin Falcons, Winters Mill Falcons, and the University of North Carolina athletics. Brad was known best for being the “Voice of the Falcons” announcing most sporting events with his famous “Thank Youuuuu”. A true servant of the Borough of Hummelstown, Brad held positions on its Borough Council from 1982 to 1985, and Civil Commission from 1980 to 2005. In 2005 he was elected Mayor serving in that role until 2017. Brad was appointed by the Dauphin County Commissioners to be a member of the Trustees of the Dauphin County Library System in 2011. He also served on Hummelstown’s Capital Campaign for the new Library at that time. Brad was a staunch supporter of the Hummelstown Fire Company, FFO Inc., Hummelstown Food Bank, and Hummelstown Community Foundation. He was instrumental in building the athletic fields at Keller Field and the “Park and Ride”, both in Hummelstown. Brad was a 1967 graduate of Hershey High School. Stoverdale United Methodist Church was very dear to him from his childhood to adult life. Brad was a Social Member of the American Legion Post 265, and the former Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1687, both of Hummelstown. For many years, along with his friends, he organized the Sweet Corn Festivals in Stoverdale.

A social person, Brad enjoyed spending time with family and friends, entertaining, cooking, and especially making soups. For his many endeavors in Hummelstown, he was the recipient of the Hummelstown Lions Club “Citizen of the Year Award” in 1999. In 2002, he was recognized by Mayor Marion “Brud” Alexander for building the pavilion in the town’s park; and in 2012 the Shade Tree Commission recognized him on Arbor Day with the planting of a tree. Brad received the “Building of the Year Award” in 2015 from the National Frame Builders Association. Along with his wife, Brad was honored this past 2019 as the Lower Dauphin Falcon Foundation’s Anchor of the Community.

Brad is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Barbara E. Walmer Miller, whom he married on July 30, 1977; one son, Matthew E. Miller husband of Emily Bollinger Miller of Westminster, MD; one daughter, Brooke Miller Farrar wife of Darren A. Farrar of Conshohocken; two brothers, Donald E. Miller and his wife Frances Belden Miller, and William E. Miller and his wife Judy Hein Miller, both of Hummelstown; two grandchildren, Scott Edward and Sara Jane Miller; three sisters-in-law, Beverly Wyld, Bonnie Gardner and Bambi Deimler; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
